MUMMY MOT

The Mummy MOT is a detailed postnatal physiotherapy assessment. It will check your posture, breathing, tummy gap, pelvic floor strength and includes assessment of the internal organs surrounding the abdominal and pelvic area. The Mummy MOT combines the principles of Physiotherapy assessment with the practice of functional retraining, identifying muscle imbalances correcting them, regaining stability and allowing optimal function. Becoming a new Mum is a busy time and some mums wait years before seeking help however, it is advised that you get yours early to avoid long term childbirth related complaints.

WHO NEEDS A MUMMY MOT?

All postnatal mums! During pregnancy our body changes dramatically but after childbirth (vaginal or c-section) mums can be left feeling weak, exhausted and scarred. This can cause complications such as pain in your back and pelvic area, bladder incontinence, constipation, prolapse, and a ‘tummy gap’. So many women suffer in silence and assume it is the new state of motherhood but despite being common it is not normal and we should not resign ourselves to having pain during sex or avoiding running and bouncing on the trampoline with the kids! So many of these symptoms can be improved or resolved given the right treatment, exercise and advice.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A MUMMY MOT PACKAGE WITH MICHELLE?

You will receive expert women’s health assessment and treatment. Michelle appreciates that there is a variety of factors that effect your healing and works with you holistically. She supports you to build your strength, relieving tension, reduce pain, relieving pelvic floor dysfunction (such as incontinence or prolapse), assists with scar healing and helps you to balance your hormones through lifestyle medicine. She teaches you practical techniques such as massage, posture and positioning to help heal from, manage and prevent future problems.

Although a fundamental component is rebuilding your strength and fitness it is not as simple as just getting back to the gym. Let’s face it having a baby can feel like we are on a physical and mental roller coaster! The radical identity shift that a woman goes through when she becomes a mother that is known as ‘matrescence’. It’s not just about how you look, but also how you feel and function. The demands that are placed on us as mothers is complex and not all physical. Other factors such as work, relationships, caring for other children, stress, sleep (or lack of it), diet, hydration, rest, and hormones all play a part in how we heal and recovery after having a baby. When it comes to healing your body there is so much conflicting advice out there. No wonder so many mums feel confused about what is the correct and ‘safe’ way to recover and doubt wether they are “doing it right” or what we should expect as our new ‘normal’.

I thoroughly recommend Michelle’s services. Having recently had my first baby. I, like manly first time mums. did not recognise my own body, from a physical and mental perspective. The sessions I have had with Michelle have not just started to improve my physical abilities but, perhaps more importantly, have helped me to engage with my body again from a perspective of gratitude. My amazing body gave me the gift of my son and I have no doubt that love I now have for it is assisting in my physical healing. Thank you Michelle, Your empathy for the postpartum body and mind truly sets you apart from other physiotherapist.”

9 weeks after I had first baby back in 2020 I received news I had bladder prolapse. I was completely devastated to say the least and my first thought was that I was never going to be able to do things with my daughter as she grew up. I didn’t have the easiest of births and recovery straight after was hard.

Previous to this I had been a full time nanny and a marathon runner for years, so I was my physically active and loved it. I had thought I’d never get back to running, continue to work, be able to pick up my daughter or ever have another baby. I thought my body was ruined and wouldn’t ever recover. I’d lost all confidence I had and I thought I’d never get it back.

I met Michelle 4.5 months post partum for a Mummy MOT. I really valued her support throughout each session I visited her. Not only was she able to provide the amazing support to help me recover the right way she helped me in so many more ways. Each time I visited my confidence grew and I felt I was recovering well. On one of my visits she mentioned she and Kelly were beginning a programme called Fly Mama. I decided to join and I’ve never gone back since.

Their programme not only helped me to get my body back but I grew stronger and after two years of hard work mastering a strong body and learning how to look after my body I was able to begin running again.

December 2022 I found out I was pregnant with my second daughter and I used Fly Mama throughout my entire pregnancy. I had the birth of my dreams and my recovery was so much better. I healed much better.

My youngest daughter is now 6 months old. I have used Fly Mama to regain my strength in my pelvic area and core and I am now back to running again already, something I wasn’t even ready for 6 months pp with my first. I even went running with my eldest at the weekend and that is definitely something I never thought I would ever do. I hardly ever get symptoms of prolapse and I ultimately feel so much stronger than I ever did previous to having my children.

Fly Mama - Michelle and Kelly. Thank you for making this. It had saved me in more ways than you both could ever imagine. Physically and mentally. You are providing something a lot of mummies need. I have learnt so much about what my body needs including rest, restoration, nourishment as well as recovery.

I’m not done - I’m still recovering and I look forward to choosing what session next on Fly Mama, but huge thanks to you both for Fly Mama. From all this, I’ve got such a passion for helping new mamas and I am thinking of utilising my personal training diploma to completely change my career in the future.
